XMPP, the eXtensible Message and Presence Protocol, is quite a mighty framework. Started in times when ICQ was a “standard”, it aimed at messaging and presence indication as the name suggests. With many available extensions a lot more can be done with it, though.

It therefore seems that XMPP servers would be nice to habe in i2p. It’s a decentralised infrastructure, so it would fit in well. And there are many client options available, so there would be nice software to use with as well.

On the old forum there is thread with a user insania announcing an xmpp server. That’s from 2012 and was not reachable to me. I found a link on some wiki to a xmpp-howto, that wasn’t working either. Now today I hit the topic again and was able to chat with someone that had attempted to install ejabberd, a common xmpp server for linux, without success.

While this is not encouraging, I will try to install it myself some day. I cannot get rid of the feeling that more decentralised services are what we need in i2p - but also in general. So one more for the todo-list. Havin setup an ejabberd on ClearNet, it should be rather easy for me to get started on this. I could imagine it will be hard to finish then, though. Changes on server-/client-software might actually be required.
